Our Mission

Our mission at Razoo is simple: to promote social good and to inspire others to get involved by making giving and serving fun, easy, and meaningful.

This mission is at the heart of our name. A "razoo" is a coin of the smallest value. The idea behind naming our company after what might seem insignificant to some, is that when combined, small contributions have great value. This word "razoo" is the root of what our business is all about--small actions coming together to change your life and to change your world.

And, we really do believe big changes can happen, not just on local and global issues, but also in the lives of people who choose to give to and serve others. At the core of Razoo is the belief that life is more rewarding when lived for others.

Our Purpose

Razoo is an unusual company in that our success is wrapped up in something that's hard to measure, but easy to spot. We measure our success by the number of people who find their passion, have an 'ah-ha' moment, are inspired to take action, and experience a paradigm shift.

Razoo exists to help people find their passion. We built Razoo as a platform that helps you learn about various causes and connect with people who care deeply about similar issues. It's a place where you can discover what makes you come alive. It's different for each of us, so learn.

Razoo exists to inspire you towards and celebrate 'ah ha' moments. By providing a platform for expression, we hope to share moments of fulfillment with each other. These moments can happen anywhere, any time -- while working at an inner city school, visiting a family who lives in a trash dump in Nicaragua, or helping a neighbor shovel snow from their driveway -- and provide the fuel to propel us towards greater service and sacrifice. There are so many great stories, so connect.

Razoo exists to make it easy to give and serve. Our ultimate hope is to see people become more socially conscious and entrepreneurial by focusing on action, practical solutions, and enterprise. And so our website is a place that allows anyone to provide practical examples of what we can do to get our toe in the water so as to start making a difference in our world. You can start making a difference today, so take action.

Razoo exists to change your world. Giving is huge part of our existence, and we would like to see a change in giving of the heart and mind, not just in the wallet. This endeavor is the greatest of our experiments. It is not simply a question of can we build a popular website, but can we build one that also changes hearts, minds, and culture. As you begin to make local and global changes, we're convinced that the greatest change that will take place is within you. We invite you to get involved in Razoo with us, so get started and invite others.

Our Platforms

Razoo focuses on reaching the next generation of change agents and leaders - the 18-35 year olds - with the message that giving and serving is fun, easy, and meaningful. We do this in four ways:

Razoo.com - a social networking site that encourages user-generated content around causes, groups, personal profiles, and action steps.

Good Happens - a blog and newsletter that aims to be the "MTV News" of the social good space, shining a spotlight on the good that happens all around us every day.

SpeedGranting - a Facebook application that encourages and rewards social entrepreneurs for pitching and promoting their social initiatives and allowing their peers to vote for them.

Brewing Good - offline events, currently being piloted in Washington, DC, that bring together young people in a fun and creative environment to celebrate the good that they are doing.

Our Story

During the summer of 2006, a group of entrepreneurs envisioned Razoo, narrowed their focus on creating a business plan, and started looking for the company leader. It just so happened that two individuals who were searching for the right person to head up the Razoo project showed up to a meeting in London, both confident that they had found the right person for the job. They were looking for someone who matched their values, had internet experience, had worked in the social good space, someone who was entrepreneurial and available. As they sat across from each other, they swapped resumes and the same name was at the top -- Sebastian Traeger.

Shortly thereafter, Sebastian was hired to build the business plan and Razoo team. That fall, the first few Razoo employees were hired (and worked at local coffee shops) and by January 2007, a logo was chosen and the team moved in to a creative office in downtown Washington, D.C. As the team grew, so did product development, and by the time summer rolled around, the Razoo crew had re-branded the web-site, created a marketing plan, and prepared the site to launch!

Our People (in no particular order)

Sebastian Traeger

Member As CEO, Sebastian's the one to blame (or congratulate) for all that's good, bad or ugly at Razoo. Sebastian has spent the past 9 years starting and building various social enterprises. Previously, he co-founded, built and sold two web businesses: Christianity.com, a popular portal featuring news and resources and Silas Partners, a web consulting company that helps non-profit organizations with online strategy, marketing and fund raising. In 1998, Sebastian helped launch Village Phone, taking the lead for their operations in El Salvador. Once upon a time, he also worked as a management consulting firm, Dean & Company (lots of numbers, lots of huge companies, lots of fun).

Before Sebastian had to work, he went to Princeton University, where he played baseball, hung out with friends, generally squandered his youth and opportunity for a great education (but hey, who didn't?). He is active in the social good space through his church (Capitol Hill Baptist Church) and through various non-profit boards.

Sebastian is newly married - 19 months and counting - with each month better than the previous one! When he isn't working he likes to travel and compete in just about anything (and he likes to talk smack when he does).

Rob Giardina

Member Rob Giardina is Razoo's Director of Engineering, the humble shepherd of our computer systems. The secret to his famous tan is many hours spent staring into his 30-inch monitor.

Over his 15-year career, Rob has served in a variety of technical roles in both enterprise and startup software firms. Most recently, as the Technical Program Manager for Amazon's Web search systems, he was responsible for guiding the implementation of new innovations in search technology. At Amazon, search is the source of all revenue and the commitment to quality and constant availability developed there serve us well as we grow beyond our first baby steps and become a nexus for social change.

When Rob is not spending time with his lovely wife and five-year-old daughter, he is usually in front of a computer somewhere or lost in thought about the mysterious next stages of our Internet society.

Bryan Owen

Member As Director of Product Development, Bryan's primary responsibility at Razoo is ensuring the products we deliver are good (or coming up with good excuses for why they aren't). Bryan has spent the past 8 years in various technology leadership positions, from project and product management to Web strategy and marketing-- most recently as a consultant at Viget Labs (www.viget.com), where he led their Strategic Consulting division in Falls Church, VA. Bryan is a seasoned veteran of the Internet startup world (ventures now resting peacefully in the dot com graveyard) and has experience in the non-profit space, where he helped an insurance association apply their business model to the Web (www.nolhga.com) and championed some innovation among their membership.

Bryan has a wife and two young kids, which means he sleeps little and hums cartoon theme songs while he works. While he's out of the office, he enjoys just about any outdoor sport and serving at his local church. If you get him talking college football, you're in for a long conversation.

If Bryan could do one thing to change the world, he would work to strengthen families so every child had a solid support system-- by building strong marriages and local communities that make parenting a priority.

Justin Streufert

Member Justin is a scrappy Web developer with nothing to lose; and this time, it’s personal. He is often described by those who know him as "a loose cannon," "a rebel with a cause" as well as "a blatant abuser of clichés."

Known to his alleged friends as "Vitamin J," Justin has spent ten years in the industry, splitting his time between systems administration and development. He's trained in nothing, but somehow seems to know a bit about everything. At Razoo, he's found his niche as a user interface developer, delighting in implementing excellent web experiences in the most elegant ways possible.

When not working, Justin devotes his life to finding new ways to confuse and irritate his long-suffering (but wonderful) children. His free time, if any, is spent half-building robots and sitting behind a drum kit doing an uncanny impersonation of a Muppet. His pet peeves include bad grammar, Hot Pockets and non-standards-compliant browsers.

Shai Chu

MemberFirst things first--her name sounds like ‘chai’ and pronounced like ‘shy’ but please don’t ask her if she likes to drink Chai and if she is literally shy. Secondly, if you have anything that needs to be organized, fixed or streamlined, Shai is the woman. She is our Operations Manager and nobody messes with her p-touch labeler (seriously).

Shai is originally from Shanghai, grew up in Hong Kong until she came over to the Land of Opportunity to pursue a college degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at The University of Pennsylvania. Honestly, she would much rather have chosen Photography, Performing Arts and Ethnic Studies. After college, Shai explored several different career paths, from being a 2nd grade teacher to working in a global financial firm. She decided to settle here at Razoo mainly because of the people (yes, you guys!) and it brings warm fuzzies to her heart knowing that she’s working for an organization that strives to bring about positive change in the world.

Outside of Razoo, Shai enjoys dreaming about travel; the Maldivian Islands and Café Del Mar in Ibiza are definitely on her list. She loves dogs but until all stars align, she will continue to be dog-less. Shai also enjoys messing about on her keyboard and bass guitar and feels very strongly that music always sounds better when it’s super LOUD!

Robin Weekley

Member Robin likes to have theme days; they can be themed just about anything, as long as they're full of awkardly paired action verbs and fake web-speak. She uses these theme days to get stuff done in the crazy marketing and business development "department, " regularly engaging her wily officemates in things like "Smash it Out Day" or " Kick it till its Dooown Day." As the all around back-up for marketing and business development efforts, Robin wears many hats...and gloves...and socks. It's awkward when it's a sweltering 95 degrees outside, but her commitment to making Razoo the sprinkles of Web 2.0 keeps her going.

Coming from a background in philanthropy, consulting and general love for all things global and good, Robin brings an enthusiasm for the development world and a love for creative media with her to Razoo. She is pumped about all the time she gets to spend pretending as if she knows what words like Ruby, XML, and PHP mean and hanging out in the up-and-coming D.C. techie crowd. She also has honed her skills at the social networking world, although she'll never admit it (unless you happen to Kudos her, in which case, Robin will jump around and kick our favorite, inflatable Razoo globes all over the office).

Her real passions lie in international development, specifically in Latin America and Africa and she will regularly pepper you with African news trivia if you're lucky. She truly believes that everything can and should be based in love, and that if it is, the world will right itself and we will truly be able to change the world for the better, not because we should ... but because we want to.

Jenn Fraher

Member Jenn Fraher loves spreadsheets, a helpful skill as she plans and tracks Razoo's marketing efforts. Her previous experience at a web consulting agency and a business research firm come in handy as she plans email campaigns, crunches numbers and otherwise brainstorms ways to spread the word about Razoo and get others excited about the community.

When she's not thinking about marketing or the Internet, Jenn can usually be found reading (she typically reads at least one or two books a week), volunteering at her church, or thinking up another creative use for a spreadsheet.

Jason Witenstein-Weaver

When asked to submit a bio, Jason began sculpting a model of himself out of wet espresso grounds while using some custom built software to simultaneously video tape and edit the performance. He's always thinking with that "other" part of his brain. He's a bit of a geek and isn't afraid to admit it. Since coming on board as our Creative Director, he's been busy behind the scenes envisioning the future of Razoo and making enhancements along the way.

He's had oodles of experiences in all sorts of creative media though he's mostly sticking to the interactive stuff and has followed his passion from DC to LA to NYC and back. He's a bit of a startup veteran (i.e. a glutton for punishment) having experienced the joblessness of the dot com crash, lived to tell the tale, and still went back for more. All the while working with non-profits, grassroots, student and human service organizations to better serve their missions one design challenge at a time.

Jason has found a home at Razoo where his creative talent and passion for social good can contribute in a big way. We're expecting great things from him, and as soon as he's done with that espresso ground effigy we're hoping he's going to do some real work (and show us the video).

Gregory "Grisha" Trubetskoy is our resident hacker (a.k.a Software Developer). While he does stare a lot into his large screen monitor, what most people do not realize is that he's mostly searching YouTube for the best Rachmaninoff performance. He claims to have been born and raised in Moscow, Russia, but nobody buys it because he has no accent.

Grisha's Internet career started with being a founder of one of the first Internet Service Providers in the Washington, DC area. He spends a fair amount of time contributing to Open Source software projects and is the original author of mod_python (google for it, it's all over the place). He's also a VP at the Apache Software Foundation.

If he is not near a computer (which is very rare indeed), then he's probably spending time with his wife and two children, playing piano or singing in his church choir.
