Everyday people, everyday changes
I was chatting with a friend awhile ago who recently moved from New York to California. We were talking about responsible buying practices, and how the tide appears to be changing in terms of people's awareness of how their actions, and those of their credit cards, affect the world around them. He mentioned that while he was in New York, he never thought about the effect of various soaps and chemicals he might pour down the drain - let alone how locally his produce was grown - but that here in California, where he finds earth-friendly awareness all around him, he's starting to pay attention to what he uses, buys and eats.
This is exactly the thing that I like to hear - people who aren't used to considering the effects of their day-to-day actions who somehow or another, start making little changes because they've become aware of how important these minor differences in routine can be.
BUT... did it really take moving to California for this to happen? I'm wondering how do we reach people where they're at - in the city, in a non-bio conscious home and community*?
I'd love to hear everyone's ideas, and also if you have any encouraging experiences of your own about how everyday people are starting to make daily changes that can really add up.
*This isn't to say, of course, that there aren't plenty of people in NY who aren't already making these choices!
