In 2004 and 2000, the liberal/progressive vote was split between the Democrats and Greens allowing George Bush to win with less than a majority of votes. In Instant Runoff Voting, voters rank candidates from most to least preferred and if no one receives the majority of first place votes (Bush), then the last place candidate (Nader) is eliminated and those who voted for him/her have their "2nd" choice votes transferred to their next choice (Gore)--this repeats through 3rd, 4th etc. until someone has the majority of votes. This unifies the progressive vote and ensures that the winning candidate is preferred by a majority of voters.
