Kayafungo, a Giriama town about 52km from Mombasa, is within one of the most impoverished areas in the Coast Province on Kenya. Lack of clean, potable water is a serious problem. Women and children walk up to six miles to collect water from pits that fill with rain. Schools close early to give the students time to collect water before going home, taking away from their study time. Water from the pits is brown and filled with visible living organisms. Waterborn diseases are a killer among the local population, especially small children.

The Student Movement for Real Change is implementing a water and sanitation project in Kayafungo. SMRC will extend freshwater pipelines by 28km across one of the most arid regions in Kenya, thereby bringing water to over 30,000 people, multiple schools, and a health clinic. In addition, the Student Movement will increase latrine coverage by 25% and conduct health and hygiene workshops to better sanitation and decrease the spread of disease.
