Water is foundational for life. Diseases from contaminated water are the leading cause of death in the world. That fact is profound enough, but the absence of safe water is not only a health issue; it leads to innumerable devastating problems, from missed educational and employment opportunities to violent conflict. Access to safe, clean water is critical for proper health care, hygiene, sanitation, food production, education, and economic activity. It is the foundation on which everything else in a community is built.

A few facts...

• More than one billion people lack access to clean, safe water. That's one on six people on the planet.
• Half of the world's hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from water-related diseases.
• The last time you flushed your toilet, you used more water than the average person in the developing world uses all day for washing, cooking, cleaning, and drinking.

Many NGOs incorporate water as part of their other relief and development activities. Others, like Living Water International, focus all of their energy on the water issue, training nationals in developing countries to help local communities acquire safe water. LWI works with nationals who are involved in medical relief, educational and agricultural development, and increases the impact of the work they do by bringing the water component alonside.
