The New Sudan Education Initiative (NESEI) is a partnership between Southern Sudanese and a global network of friends, who are uniting the Diaspora to bring the gift of education home to Sudan to ensure a lasting peace. In 2005 we began our first projects in the refugee camps in Northern Uganda. We began paying for teachers' training and started an innovative income generating project that helped feed 1200 nursery school students. With the signing of the CPA in 2005 and a newly formed peace we decided that action must be taken in Sudan to allow the people in these camps to return home. The people were questioned with what would be the best way to affect change in Sudan. The repeated answer to this questions was, "Education, Education, Education!" This cry for learning motivated us to create the New Sudan Education Initiative that would focus on the creation of secondary education in South Sudan. This would aid in the repatriation of refugees and would provide the people who remained in Sudan with a future. Our current project, initiated by Sudanese refugees, will create a new secondary school in war-torn Southern Sudan for 500 women and girls who would otherwise have virtually no access to education.
