The Student Movement works to engage young people on issues of health and education in neglected regions of the world; to create an informed generation that is truly global and actively making a difference in the lives of the 2.5 billion people in our world living on less than $2 a day.

Mission

To be a leadership development organization that provides students in the United States a vehicle to advocate for positive change in neglected regions of the world. We empower students to become leaders, giving them opportunities to improve health and education in developing communities worldwide.

Vision

To empower an informed generation of young leaders that actively makes a difference in the lives of the 3 billion people in the world living on less than $2 per day.

Philosophy

Local communities, women, and students are the ideal leaders of international development. By working directly in local communities and responding to their expressed needs and concerns; empowering women to manage projects on-site; and supporting student leadership through college campus initiatives and directly in the field, issues of global health and education can be most effectively addressed. Students around the world are encouraged to develop deep relationships with the community members where they work and to identify practical solutions that involve community participation.

Projects

South Africa: Schools and Sports Fields.

Fundraising for classrooms, libraries, and sports fields at six schools and preschools in the Manyaleti Community of rural Mpumulanga, South Africa. Directly impacts 3,000 students and community members.

Kenya: Kayafungo Water Project.

A water and sanitation project to extend freshwater pipelines 28km across one of the most arid regions in Kenya, bringing water to over 35,000 people, multiple schools and a health clinic. In addition, SMRC will increase latrine coverage and conduct health and hygiene workshops.

Joining Hands Pen Pal Program.

Letter exchange program and international curriculum encourages reading, writing, and culture interactions. Program connects students in the United States with their peers in South Africa and Kenya.

College Campus Chapters.

The Student Movement is present on dozens of campuses across the United States and Kenya. Join a campus group or start your own with the help of our Leadership Operations Package, available online.

Events

E-Newsletter: A bi-weekly email called “The Real Deal” updates members on opportunities through SMRC and raises awareness of issues including education, child labor, hunger, genocide, water sanitation and more.

National Conferences & Events: The Student Movement hosts conferences and events on International Education, Women in Development, Global Health and Leadership every year.

Service Trip to Rural South Africa: Twenty US students join SMRC for five weeks in South Africa to host camps, to teach math, science, and English, build libraries, paint preschools, host community health days on HIV/AIDS and empower the local community.

Africa Awareness Week: Annual national awareness campaign that features speakers, film screenings, dinner functions, and other activities to raise awareness of issues in Africa on college campuses across the United States.

Students Propose Projects: Each year SMRC invites students who have worked and lived in communities in developing countries to propose development projects. Through a highly selective process SMRC will select one major project to support.
