In 2004, a group of young leaders gathered to discuss human suffering across the globe. The objective of the meeting was to commit their skills and resources to fighting human rights violation and exploring newer mechanism by which, children in particular, could be protected and liberated from the scourge of war, poverty, and preventable diseases; and given the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential. The outcome of that meeting gave birth to the Youth Peace And Human Rights Network.
Headed by child rights activist Garmondeh Clinton, who was victimized by years of civil war in his country Liberia, YOPNET became a fully New Jersey incorporated non-profit in 2006. In 2007, the organization completed incorporation in Texas to open its Southern Regional office. Since its formation, the organization has strived to sensitize people on the plight of the world’s children and created opportunities for young people to take action in the areas of human rights protection, conflict resolution, peace building, education, and health.
Through its growing network of passionate activists, YOPNET continues to develop and implement programs aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of children and their families as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. YOPNET members have raised thousands of dollars and educational materials to support war ravaged communities in Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Sudan.
The organization utilizes its speakers, many of whom have come face to face with war and poverty; to educate and expand its network of peace ambassadors.
Mission
YOPNET’s mission is to build a network of innovative young leaders committed to promoting and defending human rights, global peace, social justice, conflict resolution, education, and health for children and their families in dire need. YOPNET believes that the achievement of peace and tolerance lies in the enlightenment and empowerment of the next generation to stand up against abuse and injustice everywhere and to work actively for social change.
Our work is guided by the principles of the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and works to promote human rights, peace building, and sustainable development as is enshrined in these treaties.
